Officials’ Mistake Prevents Super Over in Tied Sri Lanka-India ODI
During the first ODI between Sri Lanka and India, the match ended in a tie, but a Super Over wasn’t played because the officials made a mistake. According to the rules, a Super Over should be played in case of a tie, but the umpires and match referee misunderstood this.
The officials later admitted they got the rules wrong. There was some confusion about whether the agreement between Sri Lanka and India allowed for a Super Over, but it was eventually confirmed that a Super Over should have been played.
When the match ended, the umpires signaled the game was over, and neither team asked about the missing Super Over. The players just shook hands, and the match concluded. However, fans on social media quickly noticed the mistake and started asking questions.
After discussing the issue, the officials agreed to play a Super Over if another tie happened in the series. Sri Lanka eventually won the series 2-0.
In the tied match, India needed five runs from the last three overs to reach Sri Lanka’s target of 231. After a four from Shivam Dube, India lost two quick wickets, leading to the tie.
