PCB Adds Three New Tournaments to Domestic Cricket Calendar

Domestic Cricket

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is making big changes to its domestic cricket setup by adding three new tournaments for the 2024-2025 season. This will make the cricket season almost a full year long, starting in September 2024 and ending in August 2025.

One of the main features is the Champions tournament series, which aims to help players move smoothly from domestic to international cricket. Five teams—Dolphins, Lions, Panthers, Stallions, and Wolves—will play in three different tournaments: the Champions One-Day Cup in September, the Champions T20 Cup in December and January, and the Champions Pentagular (a first-class cricket tournament) from May to August.

With these new tournaments, the PCB will now have eight major competitions, increasing the number of matches from 203 to 261. This includes three first-class tournaments, two List-A tournaments, and three T20 competitions.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said these new tournaments are important for improving Pakistan’s position in international cricket. The Champions tournaments will bring together the best domestic players and top contracted players, creating a high-level competition similar to international matches.

The PCB is also offering better pay for domestic players. The new contracts will pay more across all categories, and the match fees for domestic games will also be higher.

Each of the five Champions teams will have strong support, including a high-performance center in cities like Faisalabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Sialkot. The teams will also have owners, mentors, and full coaching and support staff to help them perform their best throughout the season.
