Shakib Al Hasan, one of Bangladesh’s most famous cricketers, has been named among 147 people charged in connection with a murder during protests in Bangladesh in early August. The case involves the death of a garment worker named Mohammed Rubel, whose father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the complaint at Dhaka’s Adabor police station.

Shakib, who is also a former member of parliament for the Awami League, is listed as the 27th or 28th accused in the case. The Awami League was the ruling party in Bangladesh until the protests, which led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Many former ministers and lawmakers from the party are also accused in the case.

However, Shakib was not in Bangladesh during the time of the protests on August 5. He was in Canada, leading the Bangla Tigers Mississauga team in the Global T20 Canada league. Before that, he participated in the Major League Cricket in the USA until mid-July.

The complaint alleges that some of the accused, either directly or indirectly, ordered the firing that resulted in Rubel being shot while protesting on Ring Road in the Adabor area. Rubel later died in the hospital after two days.

The United Nations has reported that over 400 people died during the unrest between July 16 and August 4, with some reports suggesting the death toll could be over 650. Following the fall of the Awami League, an interim government was established, and significant changes have also occurred in the Bangladesh Cricket Board, with former national captain Faruque Ahmed now serving as president.

Shakib, who won a seat in parliament in January from his hometown of Magura, is currently playing in the Rawalpindi Test against Pakistan.
