Bavuma and Stubbs Shine as South Africa Sets Sri Lanka a Big Target!
Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs powered South Africa to a commanding position on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka. Bavuma scored a brilliant 113, while Stubbs smashed 122, as South Africa declared their innings at tea with a lead of 515 runs. Despite some fight from Sri Lanka’s bowlers, the batters controlled the game with patience and aggression.
Stubbs brought up his second Test century in just over a month, attacking Sri Lanka’s tiring bowlers with confidence. He eventually fell while trying to flick Vishwa Fernando but had already caused significant damage. Bavuma reached his third career century and second as captain after surviving some tense moments in the 90s, including a dramatic review when he was on 98. His 202-ball knock was full of skill and determination.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers, after over 150 overs in the match, looked exhausted. Vishwa dismissed Stubbs with a sharp delivery, and Asitha Fernando trapped Bavuma lbw just before tea. Lahiru Kumara, arguably their best bowler in this innings, went wicketless despite bowling with heart.
The South African pair had earlier laid the groundwork in a wicketless first session. Bavuma looked fluent from the start, driving confidently, while Stubbs was cautious but solid. Both reached their fifties before lunch and accelerated as the innings progressed. Stubbs survived a dropped catch on 33, but Sri Lanka couldn’t capitalize on their few opportunities.
With seven sessions left in the match, Sri Lanka needs a near-impossible 516 runs to win or must bat out for a draw. The pitch is still offering some bounce, and no rain is forecast, making South Africa firm favorites to seal the game.
