Women’s T20 World Cup to Include 16 Teams From 2030
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has just approved a big change for the Women’s T20 World Cup. Starting in 2030, the tournament will grow to include 16 teams. This is an exciting increase from the 10 teams that will compete in the 2024 World Cup.
A Step Forward for Women’s Cricket
The ICC says this expansion shows their dedication to helping women’s cricket grow all around the world. The 2030 World Cup will have six more teams than the upcoming 2024 event, which is great news for countries eager to join the competition.
More Opportunities for More Teams
This change is a big win for countries that haven’t had the chance to play in the Women’s T20 World Cup before. Teams like the Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, United Arab Emirates, United States, Uganda, Namibia, and Nepal now have a better chance to qualify. This expansion also opens doors for teams ranked lower, such as Indonesia, Rwanda, and Brazil, who have been focusing on growing their women’s cricket programs.
The ICC will announce details about the tournament structure and how teams will qualify at a later date.
Changes for the Men’s T20 World Cup Qualification
In other news, the ICC has also made some updates to the Men’s T20 World Cup qualifications. For the 2026 tournament, eight regional spots will be available. While Europe (2), Africa (2), and the Americas (1) keep their spots, the East Asia-Pacific (EAP) region will no longer have its own automatic spot. Instead, EAP teams will now compete with Asian teams for three spots in the World Cup.
Impact on East Asia-Pacific Teams
This change affects teams like Papua New Guinea, which previously qualified easily from the EAP region. Now, they will have to compete with teams from Nepal, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and other growing teams from the Middle East. Although it will be tougher, Papua New Guinea has won matches against some of these teams before, so they still have a chance.
