Shakib’s Bangla Tigers Out of Global T20 After Refusing Super Over
A controversy erupted at the Global T20 Canada when the Bangla Tigers Mississauga were knocked out of the tournament after they forfeited their eliminator match against the Toronto Nationals.
The drama began when persistent rain delayed the start of the eliminator in Brampton, Ontario. With time running out, match officials decided that only a Super Over could be played, which was in line with the tournament rules. However, Bangla Tigers’ captain, Shakib Al Hasan, refused to participate in the Super Over as a form of protest. According to the rules, if the game had been completely washed out, the Bangla Tigers would have advanced to the next round because they had finished higher in the group stage standings.
The owner of Bangla Tigers, Zafir Yasin, argued that the match should have been decided with “at least a five or ten-overs per side game” rather than just a Super Over. However, GLT20 CEO Joy Bhattacharjya explained that the decision was made by the match officials to ensure a result, as it was part of the regulations.
Earlier in the day, rain had also affected the Qualifier 1 match between Brampton Wolves and Montreal Tigers at the same venue, but Montreal advanced to the final because they topped the group stage.
The controversy deepened when Yasin expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to shorten the boundaries before the cut-off time to make the field safer. He also criticized the organizers for involving the Toronto team’s owners in securing additional covers for the field, suggesting it compromised the integrity of the competition.
Despite the match being awarded to Toronto, Bangla Tigers arrived at the venue the next morning for Qualifier 2, only to be informed that their request to play would not be considered. Brampton, who lost Qualifier 1, eventually fell to Toronto in Qualifier 2, setting up a final between Toronto and Montreal.
