Afghanistan’s Rising Stars Shine Bright with Asia Cup Victory
Afghanistan’s “A” team recently won the 2024 Emerging Teams Asia Cup, showcasing their talent, discipline, and teamwork throughout the tournament held in Al Amerat, Oman. They faced teams like India “A,” Pakistan Shaheens, and Sri Lanka “A,” performing consistently well in both batting and bowling, which helped them make it to the finals.
In the semifinal, Afghanistan “A” played against India “A.” Batting first, they scored a competitive 207 runs, with strong performances from players like Sediqullah Atal and Karim Janat. They then defended the total effectively, thanks to great bowling from Bilal Sami and AM Ghazanfar. This 20-run win against India took Afghanistan to the final match.
In the final, they faced Sri Lanka “A.” Afghanistan’s bowlers, especially Ghazanfar and Sami, kept Sri Lanka’s score down to just 133 runs by taking early wickets and maintaining tight control. Ghazanfar was exceptional, taking two wickets while only giving away 14 runs in four overs. When Afghanistan began chasing the target, they lost an early wicket but stayed strong. Sediqullah Atal anchored the innings with an unbeaten 55, and Karim Janat supported with 33 runs. They reached the target in just over 18 overs, winning by seven wickets.
Atal’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Series title, as he was the highest run-scorer with 368 runs. Ghazanfar was awarded Player of the Match in the final for his crucial bowling. This victory marks Afghanistan’s first Emerging Asia Cup title and highlights the depth of talent in Afghan cricket.
