Sri Lanka edged past New Zealand by four wickets in a low-scoring clash at Dambulla. On a turning track, Sri Lanka’s spinners dominated, taking six wickets and keeping New Zealand to just 135 runs. Although the chase seemed straightforward, the challenging pitch required composure, which captain Charith Asalanka provided with his unbeaten 35 off 28 balls.

Sri Lanka crossed the line with six balls to spare, maintaining control in a game that never felt too tense. New Zealand, experimenting with some new players after a long South Asian tour, struggled to adapt to the conditions.

New Zealand Struggles in the Powerplay

New Zealand’s innings began poorly as they slid in the powerplay. The ball turned sharply from the start, with Maheesh Theekshana – typically a modest spinner – generating significant turn in his first over. Although Theekshana’s only wicket came at the end when he trapped Will Young lbw for 19, his spin set the tone.

Dunith Wellalage’s arm ball sent Tim Robinson back early, and Nuwan Thushara dismissed Mark Chapman with a slower ball, leaving New Zealand at 31 for 3 by the end of the powerplay. Sri Lanka’s spinners kept control through the middle overs, and New Zealand lost five more wickets while adding just 66 runs.

Kamindu and Kusal Perera Build a Steady Chase

In response, Kusal Perera got Sri Lanka off to a quick start, scoring 22 off 15 balls during the powerplay, although Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis fell early. Kamindu Mendis contributed with a quick 23 off 16, helping Sri Lanka maintain momentum despite the pitch’s challenges.

Asalanka Steers Sri Lanka Home

Captain Charith Asalanka anchored the chase, making sure Sri Lanka reached the target despite the loss of wickets. He hit two sixes within his first 11 balls to ease the pressure and then rotated the strike to guide his team to victory.

Foulkes Shines for New Zealand

In just his third international appearance, New Zealand’s Zakary Foulkes made a strong impact. First, his 27 off 16 balls helped New Zealand recover from a dismal score to a modest total. Then, with the ball, he took 3 for 20, dismissing Nissanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Wanindu Hasaranga, giving New Zealand a fighting chance.

Ultimately, Sri Lanka’s spin attack on the turning track made all the difference, helping secure a well-deserved victory. Asalanka’s composed knock ensured they got over the line, setting up a solid start for Sri Lanka in the series.
