In a heartbreaking turn of events, two men were fatally shot in Barataria on Thursday night, including well-known local cricketer Hakeem Mitchell. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. along Upper Sixth Avenue in Malick, Trindad & Tobago.

Hakeem Mitchell, a respected figure in the local cricket community, was making his way to a nearby minimart when the tragedy struck. Known to many as ‘Mitch Man,’ Mitchell was walking south when he passed a white Toyota Fielder, where 54-year-old Junior Olliverie was seated in the driver’s seat.

At that moment, a dark-colored Suzuki Swift, with its registration number unknown, pulled up beside the Toyota. Two masked assailants emerged from the Swift and began shooting at Olliverie’s vehicle. After the attack, the suspects fled the scene in their car.

Both Mitchell and Olliverie sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services were alerted by witnesses in the area. Police officers from the North Eastern Division and the Homicide Bureau, led by Sgt. Ramjohn and Sgt. Maynard, arrived promptly. Mitchell was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex but was pronounced dead at 8:39 p.m. Olliverie passed away shortly after, at approximately 8:49 p.m.

Mitchell’s death is a significant loss to both the cricket community and his loved ones, who remember him as a dedicated athlete and a cherished individual.
